| Traditional Taiwanese
singing drama is the only indigenous drama of Taiwan. "All sounds are
expressed in singing and all movement is embodied in dancing", fully communicates the
spirit of traditional Taiwanese singing drama. The special singing style that was formed
from agricultural life has gone through rise and decline. Today industry and commerce are
developed, and people's sense of culture has intensified. At the same time, as a result of
conscientious people's efforts, traditional Taiwanese singing drama has achieved some
success, and some major troupes have performed in cultural centers. Cultural scholars are
very happy to see this phenomenon. However, geographical and social factors have caused
differences between southern and northern Taiwan as far as learning this drama is
concerned. The strong teaching faculty and favorable learning environment in Taipei has
made it easy for those interested to learn what they would. In contrast, the resources for
this drama in southern Taiwan are weak, even scare. |

| The Southern Heritage
Traditional Taiwanese Singing Drama Troupe, which was founded on August 14, 1998, is an
independent, amateur troupe that was formed out of the efforts of interested people. The
troupe was primarily formed to pass on the culture of the indigenous singing drama,
improve the environment of learning the drama in southern Taiwan, increase the drama
population, and cultivate teachers of the performing art. While it was fledgling, the
members had the consensus and were motivated by their enthusiasm for traditional dramas.
They worked hand in hand trying to lay the foundation, sow the seeds, and pass on the
heritage of traditional dramas. All the way along, the troupe has benefited from help
provided by every corner of society and has become an established institution. All the
troupe members feel grateful. Under the instruction of the nationally treasured teacher,
Ms Liao Chuang-chih, the technique has also refined. Besides learning, the members
remember vividly the mission of the troupe and have taken part in every opportunity of
